The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliai, said today that from January 1, 2025, pensioners in the Albanian capital will use public transport for free, reports Euronews Albania, quoted by BTA.

Veliai added that he is aware that inflation and high prices in Albania are a stress for pensioners, so the municipality of Tirana will contribute by making the travel of all its pensioners free from the beginning of next year.

During today's inspection of a city transport line equipped entirely with new buses, the mayor of Tirana said that the bus ticket in Tirana has the lowest price in the Western Balkans region, ATA reported.

City transport in Tirana is served only by buses, and one ticket costs 40 Albanian lek or nearly 80 cents in Bulgarian leva.

Veliai stressed that although inflation over the past ten years has led to price increases, the ticket price will not be increased. He pointed out that public transport in Tirana serves more than 1 million citizens with about 180 thousand passengers per day.

The mayor added that the city lines in Tirana are now also available in the “Google Maps” application, which helps not only the citizens of the country, but also many tourists.

Veliai informed that a complete transformation of public transport in Tirana is currently underway, which includes placing new information signs and electronic boards at the stops to show the remaining time until the next bus. The signs will follow a similar methodology used in Paris, London and New York.

In 2022, the municipal council of Tirana decided to make the subscription cards free for students in the capital, recalls TV “Top Channel”.
