The head of the US Africa Command, Gen. Michael Langley and Jeremy Burnt - chargé d'affaires at the US embassy in Libya, met with the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, the embassy announced yesterday on the "X" social network, quoted by Reuters and BTA.< br />
"General Langley and Chargé d'Affer Burnt met today with LNA commander Haftar in Benghazi to discuss the US commitment to strengthening our partnership with Libyans from all parts of the country, as well as US support for Libyan efforts to ensure of Libya's sovereignty amid regional security challenges. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in Libya and de-escalation in the context of current tensions," the embassy's publication reads.
The US calls on all interested parties in Libya to engage constructively in a dialogue with the assistance of the United Nations Support Mission in the country and the international community, the announcement said.
Libya, an oil-rich country in North Africa, has been plunged into chaos since a NATO-backed uprising ousted longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, and he was assassinated. The ensuing events left the country divided, with two rival governments: a Tripoli-based government of national unity controlling the west, and Haftar's government ruling the east.
