Russian military commanders flee Kursk Oblast in panic at the approach of the Ukrainian army, reported news.de, citing in. BILD.
In an interview with the German publication, Russian soldiers from Kursk spoke publicly for the first time about how they survived the surprise attack in Ukraine. In the early hours of August 6, the Ukrainian army carried out a surprise invasion of the border Kursk region and captured dozens of settlements in a matter of days, and hundreds of Russian soldiers were taken prisoner.
A 20-year-old Russian soldier named Denis said he had only been in the army for a few months. According to his own statements, he was captured by Ukrainian soldiers a few kilometers from the border and has since been held captive in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine. "When I woke up, they told me that there were Ukrainian soldiers in our yard. At that moment I was scared. I asked myself what to do. "My comrades in arms told me that our commander escaped," Denis said.
His commander is not the only one who has fled the Ukrainian army in panic, thus betraying his own subordinates. There are other similar cases in the Kursk Region. And the Russian soldiers captured by the Ukrainian army have only one wish – to return home to their loved ones soon.
ZSU treat them well – they are given food, they can play chess and backgammon, read books as well as go for walks. 22-year-old Russian Nikolai says that his commanders in the Kursk region simply fled after the invasion. He and his colleagues see no other option but to flee to another base. However, the Ukrainians are already waiting there. “They ordered us to put down our weapons and surrender. We did it. Then they brought us here”, he said.
A few days ago, Ukraine and Russia exchanged 115 prisoners of war each. It is expected that there will be more similar operations in the future.
The Ukrainian army has taken nearly 600 prisoners of war since the beginning of its offensive in Russia's Kursk region, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) Gen. Alexander Sirski. Russia currently has nearly 30,000 troops stationed in Kursk Oblast to protect it from the Ukrainian offensive, and more units are on their way to the area. In view of the fact that Moscow needs to transfer troops to the Kursk region, the Ukrainian plan is working, Sirsky pointed out.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said yesterday that negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin are pointless at the moment. Putin does not want compromises, but to destroy Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized.
