At least two people dead and three missing after returning from A firefighting helicopter crashed today in the Douro River in northern Portugal, Reuters reported, citing BTA, citing Portuguese authorities.
The pilot was rescued alive by a tour boat near the crash site and taken to hospital.
When the helicopter crashed, there were, in addition to the pilot, five more people in it - specialists from a team for emergency protection and assistance.
"The bodies of two people were found in the aircraft and three are missing," Rui Silva Lampreia, head of the Douro Port Authority, told reporters. He also said that underwater searches are currently underway around the helicopter and along the coasts, and that the cause of the accident is still unclear.
Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro arrived at the crash site, where dozens of emergency workers, maritime police, divers and two air force helicopters were working.
