Donald Trump pleaded not guilty today to a revised federal indictment , in which it is claimed that the former US president tried to reverse his loss in the 2020 elections, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Trump's lawyers pleaded on his behalf at the start of a court hearing in Washington, the main purpose of which was to determine how the case would proceed after the Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution.
Trump, who is the Republican presidential nominee for the Nov. 5 election, did not attend the hearing.
The new indictment, which was filed in court in August, includes the same four charges as the previous one, but it has removed allegations that, according to the Supreme Court, cannot remain part of the case, according to Reuters.
District Judge Tanya Chutkan is expected to consider competing requests from special counsel Jack Smith, who wants to move the case forward, and from Trump, who is trying to delay it until after the election.
The Supreme Court ruled that Chutkan must decide whether the other parts of the indictment should also be dismissed.
Trump has been indicted on four charges that he used false claims of election fraud to undermine the election results and thwart the certification of his defeat by Democrat Joe Biden.
The case dragged on for months while Trump's claim of immunity was considered, and it is almost certain that the actual trial will not begin before the election, according to Reuters.
Trump has argued that the indictment, as well as other lawsuits against him, are politically motivated attempts to undermine his presidential campaign.
If Trump wins the election, he is expected to order the Justice Department to drop the charges, Reuters notes.
