Typhoon Yagi kills at least 14 and injures about 200 people in Vietnam - 1

At least 14 people have died and about 200 are injured after typhoon "Yagi" reached land in North Vietnam, the local authorities announced today, who are continuing their efforts to restore and provide assistance to the victims, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Among the victims were four members of a family who died early this morning when their house collapsed, the Search and Rescue Department of Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense said in a statement.

Vietnam's Prime Minister, Pham Minh Chinh, convened a meeting via video link with representatives of the country's 26 provinces and cities affected by Typhoon Yagi to discuss the effects of the storm.

According to Vietnamese authorities, more than 3,000 houses were destroyed or damaged, 120,000 hectares of rice fields were flooded, and more than 1,000 fishponds were destroyed by the typhoon's passage.

A day after "Yagi" made landfall with strong winds and heavy rain, parts of the country are still experiencing massive power outages as emergency crews work to remove hundreds of downed power poles and dozens of damaged substations.

Typhoon "Yagi" hit Vietnam yesterday before downgrading to a tropical storm over the country's northwestern region early this morning. Vietnamese authorities have warned that flash floods and landslides are possible as the ground in this mountainous area has absorbed too much water.

Before that, typhoon "Yagi" ravaged the Philippines, where it killed at least 16 people, and China, where at least 4 people died.
