In Great Britain, 1,750 criminals will be released today on early, according to the urgent plan of the Ministry of Justice to alleviate the crisis of prison overcrowding, BNR reported.

Last week, the prison population reached a record high of over 88,500 people. This means that almost all of them are full. The situation has been critical for months, but has worsened since the riots in the summer.

Under contingency plans announced in July, offenders serving sentences of less than five years will be released after serving 40% of their time in prison, instead of the usual 50%. The plan excludes offenders sentenced to prison for violent crimes with sentences of at least four years, as well as sex offenders and domestic abusers. On 22 October the scheme will be extended to include offenders serving fixed sentences of more than five years.

A parole means offenders will be subject to restrictions for the rest of their sentence, including curfews and tagging, and will be monitored by probation officers.

The scheme was launched days after Labor won the general election, but was actually drawn up by officials while the Conservatives were in power. But Labor delayed implementing the new release rules until this week to give prison governors, the probation service and resettlement and rehabilitation organizations time to prepare properly.
