Five people in eastern Romania have been found dead after heavy rain left some areas flooded. This was announced by a spokesman for the local emergency service, reports the Associated Press, quoted by BTA.

Rescue services tried to save 95 people in the most affected eastern counties of Galaţi and Vaslui.

The bodies of the dead were found in the villages of Pekya, Dragusheni, Kostake Negri and Korod. Rescuers do not specify how exactly they died.

A Black Hawk helicopter has been deployed to assist in search and rescue operations.

Tornadoes hit 19 towns in eight counties of Romania, strong winds felled dozens of trees that damaged cars and blocked roads and traffic.

Authorities have sent text messages to people to warn them of adverse weather conditions as emergency services try to pump water out of buildings. Some roads are also closed.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Colaku canceled meetings planned for Saturday (September 14) to go to Galați County to assess the consequences of the natural disaster.

"The Prime Minister will discuss with the local authorities emergency measures to intervene and support the population and communities that are seriously affected by the floods," his office reported.

Bad weather caused extensive damage in Poland and the Czech Republic, where the first floods were recorded after heavy rains.

The day before, the maximum flood warning level due to extreme heavy rains was declared for most of the territory of the Czech Republic, including the capital Prague.

The threat of flooding also influenced the decision by German authorities in Dresden to immediately dismantle the section of the Elbe Bridge that collapsed on Wednesday (11 September).
