The British government announced today that it will allocate £75m (nearly €89m) to fight migrant-trafficking gangs migrants, reported France Press. Initially, these funds were intended to finance the migration agreement concluded with Rwanda, which was eventually dropped, BTA reported.

Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who came to power in July, scrapped the controversial Conservative-backed bill, which would have seen asylum seekers who arrived in the UK illegally deported to the East African country.

Starmer also promised to crack down on the "gangs" involved in organizing the often fatal Channel crossings.

The funding announced will be used to buy surveillance cameras and technological equipment to facilitate the gathering of evidence to prosecute traffickers, British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said. The funds will also be used to hire border guards and 100 specialized investigators for the National Crime Agency.

"The latest technology and enhanced intelligence capabilities will allow us to use all the tools at our disposal to cut down this nefarious trade," the British minister said. The British government wants to tackle the problem by working with its European partners.
