Japan's foreign minister calls on China to protect Japanese citizens - 1

Japan's foreign minister, Yoko Kamikawa, urged Beijing to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens in China after the death of a Japanese student. She demanded action against posts on social media that Tokyo described as "baseless, malicious and anti-Japanese" and that threaten the safety of children, reports the Associated Press, quoted by BTA.

Kamikawa called on his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for a full investigation into the fatal stabbing of a ten-year-old boy recorded at a Japanese school in Shenzhen, China, on September 18. She demanded that the Japanese side receive a clear explanation of the incident and that measures be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future, the AP specifies.

According to Kamikawa, Beijing should take concrete steps to protect Japanese citizens residing in the country, especially children, according to a press release from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The foreign ministers of Japan and China met last night in New York on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

The attacker, who is 44 years old, was arrested at the scene of the crime and is under investigation, according to information from Chinese authorities. The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

Kamikawa noted that the incident occurred despite Tokyo's request to Beijing to strengthen security for Japanese citizens in China, especially in Japanese school areas.

The Japanese foreign minister also told her Chinese counterpart that "baseless, malicious and anti-Japanese posts on social platforms, including those targeting Japanese schools, directly affect the safety of children and are completely unacceptable,", the AP said.

Wan Yi, in turn, said the attack was an "isolated case" and that China will act within the law. The foreign ministers agreed to cooperate to quickly resolve such issues, the Japanese foreign ministry added.
