The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that yesterday's airstrikes in Beirut killed the leader of "Hezbollah" Hassan Nasrallah, world agencies reported.
According to the announcement, he was killed by a precision air strike during a meeting of the leadership of "Hezbollah" in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, specifies BTA.
"Hassan Nasrallah is dead", announced on the social network "X" army spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani. Another army spokesman, Captain David Abraham, confirmed to AFP that the leader of "Hezbollah" was "liquidated".
Nasrallah headed the Shiite organization for more than three decades, the Associated Press recalls.
The 64-year-old cleric is the object of a veritable cult of personality in Lebanon, where he is the most influential person. He lives illegally and rarely appears in public, AFP recalls.
Earlier, Israel announced that it was mobilizing three more battalions of reservists. The decision was made before the start of the Jewish holiday period, when tensions in Jerusalem and the West Bank usually rise, Reuters notes.
After the announcement of Nasrallah's death, the Chief of the General Staff of the IDF, Gen. Herzi Halevi promised to "reach" anyone who threatens his country.
"We have not exhausted all the means at our disposal. The message is simple: whoever threatens the citizens of Israel, we will know how to hit him," the general emphasized in his statement.
So far, there is no official statement from "Hezbollah" about the fate of its leader - more than 15 hours after the devastating Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which according to the Israeli army was aimed at the "central headquarters of "Hezbollah".
According to an AFP source close to the pro-Iranian movement, contact with Nasrallah has been lost since last night.
