The Israeli authorities decided to weaken the Shiite movement Hezbollah. by eliminating its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, in order to implement a ground operation in Lebanon, the newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing the Israeli military and officials.
According to them, the Jewish state had hoped that Nasrallah's death would help to “repel” "Hezbollah" from the border without resorting to land invasion. “Some people are indispensable”, said one of the interviewees of the publication, calling Nasrallah's leadership “powerful“.
„We would like to do without a ground invasion,” added another senior Israeli official. At the same time, he defined the death of Hezbollah's secretary general as a "turning point" for that matter.
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces officially confirmed that Nasrallah was killed on September 27 as a result of an Israeli air force attack on Beirut.
The airstrike took place the previous day during a meeting of Hezbollah's leadership, which Nasrallah attended. According to the TV channel Al Hadath, citing Israeli sources, during the attack on the headquarters of the Shiite organization, powerful aerial bombs were used to destroy bunkers. At least six buildings near the site of the airstrike collapsed. According to preliminary data, there are victims and dozens of injured.
