The West does not set itself the goal of defeating Russia in the conflict with Ukraine. This was stated by the candidate for chancellor of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, in an interview with the German tabloid "Bild", BNR reported.
According to him, Ukraine should restore sovereignty over its territory, and Russia should stop attacking it.
"We must do everything possible to make the continuation of the war hopeless for Russia. However, we are very far from achieving this goal," Mertz pointed out.
In his words, Kiev's allies have done too little and acted too late.
Parliamentary elections in Germany are next year. The latest opinion polls give the Christian Democratic Union 33% support against 14% for the Social Democratic Party of incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
