Taiwan's Supreme Court sentenced 17 years in prison for a former air force officer accused of spying for China, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
Low Wenchin was found guilty of violating the Armed Forces Penal Code for "aiding an enemy spy" and passing on military secrets. The former officer "was introduced by a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spy named Mr. Liu," who allegedly arranged for him to meet with CCP officials abroad.
Lowe helped Liu "engage in espionage by providing him with internal Air Force documents (some of which were considered classified) in exchange for a reward". The court did not specify what secrets Low had handed over to China, saying it could only give a brief explanation because the case involved defense secrets.
Low has been acquitted twice in previous rulings by Taiwan's Supreme Court. Today's ruling did not specify why the court changed its position, but acknowledged that he had "served the enemy," regardless of whether he acted directly or indirectly.
The conviction of the former Air Force officer is another of the recent espionage cases. In August, Taiwan's Supreme Court sentenced eight former military personnel to up to 13 years in prison for spying for Beijing.
