A warning message through the Ro-Alert system was received through last night, residents of the northern part of the Romanian district of Tulcea, after the structures of defense and national security detected a possible Russian attack against targets on the territory of Ukraine. The Ministry of National Defense of Romania informed that two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air Force were lifted from the military base "Mihail Coglunicanu", near Constanța, to monitor a group of small drones heading towards Ukraine. Two more Romanian F-16 aircraft have taken off from Borca Air Base.
The Spanish planes completed their mission around 03:00 local time, and the Romanian ones - around 05:00. During this interval, Romania's radar system did not detect the penetration of drones involved in the attack on Ukrainian targets into the national airspace, according to a press release of the Ministry of National Defense published this morning.
Three calls were registered to the emergency number 112 during the night requesting information. "We note that any citizen who feels in danger or notices something unusual can call the single emergency number 112 for support or help," the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations specifies.
The Ministry of National Defense of Romania informs the allied structures in real time about the situations caused by the Russian attacks, staying in constant contact with them.
The Ministry once again categorically condemns the attacks of the Russian Federation against targets of the Ukrainian civil infrastructure, defining them as "unjustified and in serious contradiction to the norms of international law".
On September 27, residents of the northern part of Romania's Tulcea County were again alerted to the possibility of falling objects via the Ro-Alert system after a group of drones was spotted targeting targets on Ukrainian territory located along the border with Romania. At the time, the Department of National Defense said national airspace was likely violated for less than three minutes during a Russian drone attack on targets in Ukraine.
On September 24, fragments of a Russian drone "Geran 2" were found by teams of the Ministry of National Defense of Romania and the Romanian Intelligence Service outside the populated perimeter of Plauru municipality in the eastern district of Tulcea. A little earlier in September, the Defense Committee of the Romanian Senate began discussions with representatives of the Ministry of Defense on changes to the legislation that would allow the Romanian army to shoot down drones that enter the country's airspace without permission.
Romania, which is a member of NATO, has a 650 km common border with Ukraine. Debris from Russian drones has already fallen on Romanian territory several times after attacks on port and civilian infrastructure on the Ukrainian side of the Danube River.
