Spain shelters dissidents from Nicaragua - 1

Spain will offer citizenship to 135 Nicaraguan dissidents, reported France Presse, quoted by BTA, citing statement from yesterday by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albarez.

Questioned critics of the government of President Daniel Ortega were stripped of their Nicaraguan citizenship on September 5 and are not allowed to live in their country, AFP reports. They were released from prisons with the assistance of the US and initially settled in Guatemala.

Spain had already offered citizenship to over 300 Nicaraguans who are opponents of the current regime. Among them were the most popular contemporary Nicaraguan writers Gioconda Belli and Sergio Ramírez.
