German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed on Tuesday that checks on German borders should continue as long as possible, DPA reports.
"We will do this for as long as it takes. And it will be a very long time, Scholz told RTL television. However, he admitted that the inspections "are causing a lot of anger at the moment".
We remind you that from September 16 checks are being carried out at all German borders in order to reduce the number of illegal migrants.
New checks have been introduced at the land borders with Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Since the end of July, there are already temporary checks on the border with France because of the Olympic Games.
Borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland are under increased control for a longer period. The decision has reportedly caused some irritation in neighboring countries.
Border controls introduced by Germany could be extended beyond December 15 if necessary as they have proved very successful in fighting illegal migration, the German interior minister said earlier.
"For me, border control will stay as long as it takes," said Nancy Feser.
