Despite waves of fake news and foreign interference campaigns , the elections for the European Parliament proved to be resistant to the threats of disinformation, notes Politico, quoted by BTA.
The European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) recorded the highest level of EU-related disinformation on online platforms in May – month before Europeans head to the polls, according to an estimate prepared by the European Commission and seen by Politico.
Despite this wave of questionable activity, it did not lead to a "major incident to disrupt the elections," European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova said in Luxembourg ahead of the General Affairs Council meeting.
Yourova will present the results of her tour in the spring when she visits a dozen EU countries to raise awareness of election manipulation by rogue actors, meeting with officials, regulators and experts.
At the beginning of the election year, there were concerns that artificial intelligence – specifically manipulative fake news – can destabilize the process. Those fears have not been borne out and the technology has not been used "to a great extent", the EU analysis said, despite some cases of use of AI-generated content by parties such as France's National Assembly. and "League" in Italy.
The European Commission's assessment, called a "snapshot" by Yourova, will help identify flaws and give "an idea of the tactics, techniques and evolving risks" to use as an example in future elections to deal with such threats, she stressed.
