WHO expresses concern over cholera in Lebanon - 1

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the first confirmed case of cholera in Lebanon since the start of the escalation of the conflict between Israel and "Hezbollah" and stated that it is working urgently to prevent a larger epidemic explosion, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Lebanese health authorities confirmed this week the first case of cholera amid the escalating conflict between the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite movement and Israel.

Cholera is a diarrheal disease that spreads through contaminated water, for example when water sources are contaminated with faeces. The risk of an epidemic exists whenever many people live together in insufficiently good hygienic conditions, DPA notes.

In Lebanon, more than 1 million people have been displaced by Israeli attacks and the Israeli army's battles with Hezbollah. Many people live in cramped spaces in emergency shelters or in the open and do not have access to clean water.

In October 2022, a cholera epidemic broke out in Lebanon for the first time in over 30 years. More than 8,000 probable cases were reported and 23 people died before the outbreak ended in June 2023. The disease is especially life-threatening for young children.

Tests are currently being conducted and water samples are being taken. In collaboration with partner organizations, WHO is trying to ensure clean drinking water and improve wastewater disposal. In addition, medical materials for the treatment of those infected with cholera have already been imported into the country.

A cholera vaccination campaign began in early August, but was interrupted due to the escalation of hostilities between "Hezbollah" and Israel.
