Russia accuses the US and its allies of provoking a new escalation in the Middle East - 1

The United States and its allies are deliberately provoking a new escalation in the Middle East, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said at an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council, convened at the request of Iran in connection with the Israeli strike, reports TASS, as quoted by Focus.

"The United States and a number of its allies not only did not try to dissuade West Jerusalem from this extremely dangerous undertaking, but also directly or indirectly indicated that Israel was supposedly entitled to such a response. In doing so, they acted irresponsibly, as they deliberately provoked a new escalation in the Middle East, rather than preventing an exchange of blows between the countries. In addition, as far as we can tell, Washington has also been supplying West Jerusalem with the intelligence necessary to carry out the strikes," emphasized Nebenzia.

The diplomat added that "the attack not only violates the provisions of international law, but also destabilizes the already tense situation in the Middle East, which is teetering on the brink of war."

"We call on the US to assume its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council and allow the main UN body responsible for maintaining international peace and security to use all available tools to stop the conflict and implement existing resolutions on the Middle East settlement. Only in this way will the foundation be laid for the resumption of the peace process, based on the principle of "two states for two peoples," which we all unfailingly support," said Nebenzia.

According to him, "only in such a scenario can the entire Middle East region be protected from a large-scale confrontation with catastrophic consequences for all countries, including Israel."

"We strongly urge all parties involved to exercise restraint, stop violence and prevent events from developing into a catastrophic scenario. It is important that all participants find the strength and wisdom to break out of the spiral of uncontrolled escalation," added Nebenzia.

At the same time, he noted that "it is difficult to get rid of the feeling that West Jerusalem is deliberately escalating the situation, despite Tehran's signals of readiness to refrain from a new confrontation."
