„While its authoritarian elite continues to spread disinformation, mobilize troops along our border and refusing to prosecute the terrorists who killed our police sergeant a year ago in Banska and Zvečan, Serbia will always pose a great security risk not only to Kosovo, but also to other neighboring countries that are hindering the “Greater Serbia” project that now they call the “Serbian world”, namely Montenegro and Bosnia”.
This is what Prime Minister Albin Kurti said regarding Serbia and the actions of its president, reported “Koha”.
Kurti made these statements during his two-day stay in Switzerland, where he participated as a keynote speaker in the discussion organized by the Swiss Society for Foreign Policy, BGNES specified.
During the discussion, the Prime Minister of Kosovo indicated that there is no hope for Serbia to be reformed with the authoritarian elite running the country.
This week, the government of Serbia declared Kosovo a "area of special social protection" and approved a draft law that provides for the prosecution of those who, according to Belgrade, are persecuting the Serbian population in Kosovo.
The international representatives defined this action of Serbia as a violation of the dialogue arrangements and requested a review of the decisions made.
But the authorities of the country, which maintains strong ties with Russia, expressed a position that the demands of the West will not be taken into account.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, the decisions are aimed at improving the lives of Serbs.
„The legislation in question is actually about protecting the rights and social security of the Serbian people in Kosovo, being consistent with our wider commitment to stability in the region. Even with the UN resolution approved by the General Assembly, with which the EU assumed the role of mediator in the dialogue, it is said that the dialogue should aim to improve people's lives”, is the justification of this ministry for measures towards Kosovo.
In his speech in Switzerland, Prime Minister Kurti mentioned the impact of the economic and political expansion of Russia and China in the Western Balkans. He emphasized that it is essential that Kosovo and the entire Western Balkans remain anchored in the values of the European Union.
„I imagine a Europe in which the Western Balkans are fully integrated not only economically, but also culturally and socially. A Europe strong enough to withstand external pressure, in defense of all its citizens. A Europe where our young people see a future they can believe in and where they can make their dreams come true. The following years will be decisive for the pace of EU integration”, said the Kosovo Prime Minister.
He called on Switzerland to continue supporting Kosovo in its membership of international organizations and multilateral cooperation, "which for countries like ours are essential to achieve economic and security goals".
