The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the European Union peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina and considered the regular six-monthly report on the situation in the country presented by the high representative of the international community, Christian Schmidt, HINA reported, quoted by BTA.
With 15 votes “for“ The Security Council decided without discussion that the EU mission "Altea" will continue for another year.
The mission carried out on the ground by the EU force EUFOR began in 2004, when the EU took over from NATO the responsibility for monitoring and implementing the military part of the Dayton Agreement, which ended the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia.
All members of the UN Security Council expressed support for the mission, as well as for preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Most representatives, including those of the US and Great Britain, expressed support for the actions of High Representative Christian Schmitt, who in his report emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina had missed the opportunity to progress towards EU membership. He warned of the slow pace of reforms and expressed concern about the country's stability due to separatist rhetoric and actions by Republika Srpska politicians.
Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebeznya, again expressed doubts about Schmidt's actions, accusing him of violating the Dayton Agreement. According to Nebeznia, the West is trying to forcibly turn Bosnia and Herzegovina into a centralized state.
