German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today called for unity on occasion of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

In a video address, he gave this event as an example of the cohesion of Europe.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was "the happy culmination of a pan-European development,", Scholz emphasized. He again called for solidarity, given the global political situation.

"Our shared story in the fall of 1989. it shows us how we achieve our goals: by being together - for peace and freedom, for security and prosperity, for the rule of law and democracy", the German Chancellor pointed out. He pointed to the summit of the European political community in Budapest on Thursday and Friday as an example of strengthening this unity.

Scholz specifically mentioned the contribution of Germany's neighbors in Central and Eastern Europe to the fall of the Berlin Wall. "There were brave trade unionists from "Solidarity" in Poland. Singing revolutionaries in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Brave women and men in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and other countries," he noted.

Scholz drew attention to the contribution of the East Germans as well. "And, of course, the demonstrators from Monday - in Leipzig and in many other places in the former East Germany, who held hands,", he recalled and said in conclusion: "The victory of freedom in the fall of 1989. it was a pan-European victory."

The Social Democrat Scholz also spoke against the background of the complicated domestic political situation in Germany, where the ruling tripartite coalition led by him collapsed.
