FBI investigates calls for blacks to go to plantations and pick cotton VIDEO - 1

US authorities have begun investigation after black Americans in several states received racist text messages urging recipients to "go to the plantations and pick cotton," the BBC reported, citing BTA.

Black students and students in Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania are among those who have received such messages.

The FBI said it was opening an investigation into the incident. "The FBI has received information about offensive and racist text messages sent to citizens across the country. In this regard, we are in contact with the Department of Justice and other federal agencies," the department said in a statement.

Americans reportedly began receiving racist messages on Wednesday, a day after the presidential election, which was won by Republican candidate Donald Trump, notes the BBC.

Some of the messages contain references to the Trump campaign, but representatives of the president-elect himself have already said they had nothing to do with it.

"The Trump campaign had absolutely nothing to do with these text messages,” said staff spokesman Stephen Chung.

It is still unclear who sent the racist messages and exactly how many people received them.
