Activists from the “The bridge remains“ have organized a tent camp at the approaches to the Old Bridge on the Sava River in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, and have been preventing the facility from being dismantled for days, informs the Balkan editorial of “Al Jazeera”, quoted by BTA.
The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure issued a decision to remove the bridge, and the original plan of the city authorities was to close the bridge to traffic from November 1st.
A new bridge is planned to be built in its place, which will contribute to the better functioning of transport in Belgrade.
Activists of “The bridge remains“ prevented the technique from starting work on dismantling the bridge on November 1st.
The Sava River bridge was saved from mining in 1944 by the teacher Miladin Zarich, and the opponents of its demolition point out that the bridge is an anti-fascist monument and a heritage of the city that should be preserved.
