After nearly 1,000 days of resistance to Russian invasion, Ukraine's allies are increasingly pushing for an end to hostilities and a deal between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin to pave the way for negotiations, Bloomberg reports, as quoted by Focus.
According to two European officials quoted by the publication, there is a growing understanding that Zelensky will have to make compromises with Putin. They note that the prospect of a decisive victory for either side is becoming increasingly unlikely.
On the eve of the G20 summit, the US undertook a significant change in approach, authorizing long-range missile strikes on Russian territory. The goal, according to Bloomberg, is to strengthen Zelensky's position before the eventual return of Donald Trump as US president.
„The idea behind this change is that it will help Zelensky negotiate from a stronger position,” the article states. However, experts warn that while this step represents a serious escalation, it is unlikely to lead to a dramatic change in the course of the conflict.
The sudden increase in calls for a settlement of the conflict reflects concerns among Ukraine's allies about a potential reduction in US support if Trump is re-elected, Bloomberg notes.
