The historic victory of the Austrian Freedom Party (AFP) in the provincial election in Styria was confirmed and with an almost complete vote count and a deviation in the final result of 0.3 percent, reported BTA.
With 34.8 percent, the winner is APS, which is the best result of the party. APS doubles its result from the last election and it is very likely that the future provincial governor will be the provincial party leader Mario Kunasek. The Austrian People's Party (ANP) remained second with 26.8 percent (minus 10 percent), the Austrian Social Democratic Party ranked third with 21.4 percent. Of the smaller parties, the Greens (6.2 percent) maintained their position ahead of NEOS (5.9 percent) and the Austrian Communist Party (4.4 percent), although their votes were halved.
In the 48-member parliament of Styria, the APS will have a majority in a coalition with both the ANP and ASDP, political scientists predict. It is very unlikely that the coalition of ANP and ASDP led by Christopher Drexler will be continued, as it has been so far.
In the first reactions of the ANP of Styria, and according to some observers, the decision of the Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen not to give a mandate to form a government to the winner of the parliamentary elections, Herbert Kickle of the APS, has united the ranks of APS and contributed to the convincing victory in Styria.
Today over 940,000 people were called to vote. According to incomplete results, the voter turnout in this year's elections was 70.2% (in 2019, it was nearly 63.5 percent).
