Oslo police have also opened a new investigation against him for another alleged sex crime, but no formal charges have yet been brought, Norwegian media NRK said.
Marius Borg Heuby, who does not hold a royal title, was arrested in Oslo on a preliminary charge of having "sexual contact with a person who was unconscious and unable to resist".
Police said it was unclear exactly when the alleged incident occurred, but said the victim was likely in a helpless state.
Huobi vehemently denies the allegations.
Despite the initial detention, the police announced that they would not seek an extension of the detention as there was no risk of destroying evidence.
"It wasn't surprising. He shouldn't have been detained at all," commented Höby's defense attorney, Oyvind Bratlien, adding that his client would be released later today.
On August 4, Oslo police responded to a report of a disturbance, and Borg Høiby was briefly detained. In the case, preliminary charges were brought for causing bodily harm, after which he was released.
The police said that there is a relationship between Heuby and the victim.
More preliminary charges were subsequently added against him, including violating restraining orders and driving without a valid driver's license.
Marius Borg Heoby is the son of Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship and is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon.
Håkon and Mette-Marit have two children together, who are part of the line of succession to the Norwegian throne.
