The lawyers of the son of the current American president, Hunter Biden, believe that the victory in the elections for the head of state of the Republican Donald Trump represents a threat to their client, writes the newspaper The Washington Post.

Lawyers for Hunter Biden, who is expected to be indicted soon on criminal charges of tax evasion and gun law violations, “launched an aggressive defense in the public arena”, the publication wrote, noting that the time until Trump's January 20, 2025 inauguration, during which the current US leader could pardon his son, is shrinking.

Hunter Biden's defense insists there is no basis for an investigation against him, arguing that "ordinary citizens" will not be prosecuted by the US Department of Justice on such charges.

„Now that the outcome of the election is known, the threat against Hunter is very real,” the paper quoted the lawyers as noting that Trump claimed he “put Hunter on his enemies list”. “The prospect of Trump retaliating against members of special counsel David Weiss's team if they don't take a tougher line against Hunter undoubtedly compels them to keep up the pressure on him,”, his defense said.

Previously, Joe Biden noted that he had no intention of pardoning his son. In turn, Trump, shortly before the November 5 election, did not rule out the possibility of pardoning Hunter Biden if he wins.

At the beginning of December 2023. the son of the US leader was indicted on nine counts of tax evasion. Prosecutors believe he spent millions of dollars "on an extravagant lifestyle instead of paying taxes." He could face up to 17 years in prison. In September of this year, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to all nine charges. Sentencing in this case is scheduled for December 16.

Also in June 2024. jurors found the son of the American leader guilty on all three counts of violating the gun law. Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison in that case. Sentencing is expected on December 12.
