Three people died as a result of the bad weather in Greece, which also caused damage to roads and buildings on the islands of Lemnos and Rhodes, as well as in other regions of the country, reported France Press, referring to the public television ERT.
A man was found dead on the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece after the passage of the storm “Bora”, reported the Greek publication Kathimerini.
The man's car overturned and fell into a ditch after he tried to avoid collapsed rocks from a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall.
According to ERT, the man whose body was discovered this morning probably died of hypothermia after being unable to get out of his vehicle for at least eight hours. His identity has not yet been established.
Earlier, two victims of flooding were reported on the island of Lemnos.
Storm Bora, which swept through Greece on Saturday, is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the north and northwest until Tuesday. On Saturday, more than 17 centimeters of rain fell in 12 hours, according to the Greek meteorological services, notes AFP.
Hundreds of homes were flooded and several areas were left without electricity.
„The storm “Bora“ is another proof that what we knew about natural phenomena is no longer valid,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told journalists today.
Many fields on the island of Lemnos, whose economy is mainly agricultural, were flooded.
On the island of Rhodes, which is a popular tourist destination, the storm damaged roads, houses and commercial buildings overnight Saturday into Sunday, regional governor Yorgos Hadjimarkos said. Many people have been evacuated, he added.
A bridge was destroyed and cars were swept away by the torrents. The storm also disrupted rail links in central Greece after flooding tunnels at the Tempe Pass, site of the 2023 train crash that killed 57 people.
