Private military company (PMC) “Wagner” continues to fight abroad. This was reported by Voice of America, quoted by NOVA.
„During the last year and a half, Prigozhin's empire has been torn between numerous structures. Some joined the Ministry of Defense, others the National Guard, others the Chechen special forces “Akhmat“. This was stated by the Russian journalist Ilya Barabanov.
PMC “Wagner“ rose to prominence in 2014 when the paramilitary organization began sending thousands of mercenaries to Ukraine and the Middle East. By the end of 2019 the private army has developed a serious presence in Africa as well, establishing bases in 20 countries on the continent.
According to journalist and researcher John Letcher “in Syria and Ukraine there was a high level of cooperation between “Wagner”, the Ministry of Defense and other Russian institutions. In Africa, however, Prigogine was almost alone. He and his people determined what the Russian interests would be there”.
After Prigogine's attempted riot in 2023. and his death in a plane crash just two months later, the paramilitary organization was integrated into the Russian army. According to the Ukrainian analyst from the “Come back alive“ (Come Back Alive) Maria Kucherenko, however, the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) controls PMC “Wagner“ “ from its creation until today “. Although the paramilitary organization is no longer fighting in Ukraine, former mercenaries from its structures continue to fight there, VOA points out.
