During the meeting with the Ukrainian delegation led by Andriy Yermak, the team of the newly elected US President Donald Trump "did not show any particular interest” to the idea of the country joining NATO, writes the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal.
In addition to future Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, future US Vice President JD Vance also met with the head of the presidential office in Kyiv.
According to the publication, Kellogg has supported current arms sales to the Joe Biden administration, saying it will help Trump in future negotiations. At the same time, the topic of Ukraine's entry into the Alliance was not of interest for discussion by the Republicans.
WSJ writes that Ukraine soon "plans to declare readiness for peace”. Ermak's goal in the US, the newspaper said, citing sources, is to present Ukraine as a "constructive partner in achieving peace, not as an obstacle to it”. And also establish connections with the associates of the newly elected president.
At the same time, the publication recalls that Trump's associates are discussing peace plans, according to which approximately 20% of the territory of Ukraine will remain in Russia after the war. It was not specified whether this was discussed at the meeting with Ermak.
Ukrainian interlocutors of the WSJ also claim that Kiev's main goal in the negotiations is to obtain real security guarantees to prevent a repeat of the war.
