Five people died on Monday after an explosion at a fuel depot of the Italian energy company "Eni" in Calenzano - Tuscany region. Four workers were injured, another 17 were injured by the shock wave, BNR reported.
In protest against what happened today, unions are holding rallies and marches.
“Stop deaths in the workplace“ and “Without security, there is no work, no dignity, no life“, are the slogans of the unions from Florence and Prato. They announced a 4-hour provincial general strike with a rally in Calenzano for today. The two-hour protest by workers at Eni's refinery in Livorno, connected by a 90-kilometer pipeline to the company's warehouse in Calenzano, where the explosion occurred, lasted two hours. Due to what happened there and the strikes, the bus lines of Tuscany warned that there was a shortage of diesel and that inconveniences for consumers were possible.
The mayor of Calenzano, Giuseppe Carovani, said in an interview with the newspaper “Repubblica“ that the "Eni" warehouse should be removed. The governor of the Tuscany region added that the facility, built 70 years ago in an open area, is now in the middle of a densely populated and industrial area and is not suitable for being there.
