Germany and its European partners are determined to provide security guarantees to Ukraine as part of any potential peace deal. This was stated by the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Analena Berbock, during a meeting in Berlin with European colleagues and the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Kaya Callas, reports DPA, cited by BTA.
Support for Ukraine
Berbok stressed that Ukraine needs “serious security guarantees”, including long-term military and financial support. According to her, providing these guarantees would send a clear message that Europe is protecting its security and future.
Kaya Kalas added that a stronger Ukraine on the battlefield will strengthen its position in possible peace negotiations. "Ukraine will decide for itself when it is ready for negotiations," stressed Kalas.
Peacekeeping Mission Discussions
Both Berbok and Kalas did not comment on the possible participation of German and European troops in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. The issue remains controversial, especially since Berbock earlier this month did not rule out such a possibility, leading to criticism in Germany.
Humanitarian support
The German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, is also visiting Ukraine. She presented a “winter package” aid worth 90 million euros, designed to provide electricity and heat for 2.6 million people during the cold months.
„I want to see with my own eyes that the money goes where it is most needed”, Schultze said during his visit to Kyiv.
