The Peruvian navy said it had rescued about 30 fishermen who had been stranded at sea for two days as huge waves crashed along the country's northern coast, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
The fishermen were unable to return their boats from the sea back to Acapulco Beach in the Tumbes region.
Jaim Yachila, mayor of the province of Contralbirante Villar, which is part of Tumbes, said that some fishermen were unable to wait any longer for rescue, which accelerated the operation.
“The fishermen did not want to lose their boats,“ he added.
Many vessels capsized in the waves, which also forced the closure of several ports in the region.
Peruvian Defense Minister Walter Astudillo directed the rescue operation from an army helicopter flying over the affected area.
