Over half a billion euros were collected in Belgium in the last year in fines for violating traffic rules, local media report. The most common violation remains exceeding the speed limit.

The majority of the fines were paid immediately, with penalties ranging from 58 to 4,000 EUR imposed depending on the severity of the offense, and in some cases the driver's license was revoked for a period of 3 days to 5 years, BTA specifies. It is specified that of the total amount of fines, 84 million EUR were allocated to the southern region of Wallonia, 27 million EUR - to Brussels and 152 million EUR for the northern region of Flanders, and the rest went to the federal budget to support the police.

The most common speed limit violations are up to 10 km/h, talking on the phone while driving, and failure to observe signs for closed roads. Statistics show that road accidents are increasing when traveling to and from work. According to representatives of road safety associations, this is due to the growing interest in electric bicycles and the unsuitable urban environment for them.
