French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said today that his country launched missile strikes over the weekend, hitting Islamic State targets in Syria, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
“On Sunday, French aviation carried out targeted strikes against Islamic State targets in Syrian territory,“ Lecornu wrote on the social network “Ex“.
The French air strikes followed a similar US strike on Syrian territory, which the US said killed two IS members.
Syria faces an uncertain political future after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group declared a state of emergency earlier this month. (HTS) ousted the country's president, Bashar al-Assad.
The lightning campaign led by HTS ended a 13-year civil war but raised many questions about the future of Syria, in which foreign countries, including Turkey and Russia, have significant and potentially competing interests.
