The Slovak government has said there is no shortage of gas, with the assurances coming as natural gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine are expected to be halted, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The Slovak Economy Ministry announced that the country's gas storage facilities are 100% full and there are enough reserves for the new year.

“I would like to reassure all people and companies in Slovakia that we are prepared for this scenario and that there is currently no risk of gas shortage“, explained Economy Minister Denisa Sakova.

Ukraine, which has been defending itself from Russia's aggressive war for almost three years, will halt Russian gas transit at the beginning of the year after the existing contract expires.

The halt to transit is causing problems for Slovakia. Prime Minister Robert Fico, who recently visited Moscow, threatened on Friday that Slovakia would cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine in return.
