At least six people have died in road accidents caused by the severe winter storm that has affected the central and eastern regions of the US.
Fox News, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio, reports that the snowstorm has affected the territories of a total of 27 states. As a result of the snowfall, major highways have been closed, and hundreds of drivers have been stranded on the road due to the inability to move.
American news agencies report that more than 300,000 people from Missouri to Virginia are without electricity because the winds, ice and heavy snowfall have knocked down trees and power lines. Restoring power is difficult because conditions are still poor and repair teams cannot reach some of the damage.
On Monday, aviation authorities canceled more than 1,900 flights, and the same number of flights were canceled on Sunday.
Before the weather worsened, the governors of several states declared a state of emergency and warned citizens to stay home unless it was necessary to go out to be safe.
The storm also hit the capital, Washington, where it recorded the heaviest snowfall in two years. Government offices have closed, but that hasn't stopped the ceremony in Congress to certify Donald Trump's election victory.
