A trial is underway in Germany against a couple accused of murdering a 27-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 51-year-old mother with the aim of kidnapping the younger woman's five-week-old baby, reports the newspaper “Ukrainska Pravda“, quoted by News.bg.
During the first hearing, the defendants, a 45-year-old woman and her 43-year-old husband, confessed to the murders and expressed regret for their actions.
According to the prosecution, the couple, living in Sandhausen near Heidelberg, had planned the crime for a long time, with the woman aiming to have a daughter. The prosecutor's office says she contacted Ukrainian refugees through a Telegram group and sought contact with the victims.
The 27-year-old woman and her mother, who were living in a refugee shelter in the Rhine-Neckar region at the time, confided in the accused. The young Ukrainian woman even sought help with translation in connection with the upcoming birth.
In March 2024, the two women were murdered and the baby was abducted. The bodies of the victims were found several days apart: first on the banks of the Rhine, and later in another location. The baby, found unharmed, is now being cared for by her aunt in Ukraine, who is a co-plaintiff in the case.
According to the prosecutor's office, the woman who committed the murders is likely Russian, while her husband is German. However, their nationality has not been officially confirmed.
The trial, which will include nine days of hearings, is scheduled to conclude on February 21, when the verdict is expected.
