Temple stampede kills at least six in southern India VIDEO - 1

At least six people have died and dozens were injured when hundreds of people crowded at the entrance to a temple in southern India, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

The stampede began the moment police opened the gates, the head of the temple said.

Devotees from across India had gathered for a 10-day festival at the Sri Venkateswara temple in the city of Tirupati in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Stamps that end in people being trampled are a relatively common occurrence during Indian religious festivals, when large crowds gather in a small area with poor infrastructure and low safety measures. In July, at least 116 people died, most of them women and children, during a religious gathering in northern India, the AP recalls.

The Prime Minister of Andhra Pradesh state said in an article in "Ex" that he was "deeply saddened" by the recent deaths.
