North Korea launched at least one missile of an unidentified type into the Sea of Japan today, the Associated Press and Reuters reported, quoted by BTA, citing the South Korean armed forces.
No further details are known at this time.
This is the second North Korean missile test this year. In the first, on January 6, the closed communist country announced that it had launched a new hypersonic medium-range missile.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to expand his arsenal of weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads to counter his opponents, the AP notes.
Reuters points out that the new missile test was carried out a week before Donald Trump returned to the White House. During his first term as US president from 2017 to 2021, Trump held unprecedented meetings with Kim, which, however, never led to a real diplomatic breakthrough.
In the past two years, Pyongyang has significantly increased its missile tests, while at the same time sharpening its rhetoric against the United States and South Korea. North Korea has also stepped up its military cooperation with Russia, DPA notes.
