Republicans in the US Congress have prepared a bill that would allow US President-elect Donald Trump to begin negotiations to purchase Greenland immediately after taking office, Reuters reported.
The bill is called the "Make Greenland Great Again Act" - by analogy with Trump's main political slogan, "Make America Great Again". The document was authored by House members Andy Ogles and Diana Harshbarger (both from Tennessee), and by the morning of January 13, it had the support of 10 lawmakers.
The bill contains a clause according to which Trump, immediately after taking office on January 20, will have the opportunity to “enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark for the purpose of acquiring Greenland from the United States. If an agreement is reached with Denmark, Trump will have to transfer “the agreement, as well as all related materials and supplements“ to the appropriate congressional committees within five days.
On January 7, Trump, who will take office as US president on January 20, said that Greenland should become part of the United States to protect itself from Chinese and Russian threats. Back in 2019, during his first term as president, he said that the United States could buy Greenland, which is a territory within Denmark and has broad autonomous rights. As then, the authorities of Greenland and Denmark declared the absurdity of this idea. In addition, Trump is actively promoting the idea of Canada joining the United States as the 51st state.
