Hackers, allegedly linked to the Chinese government, illegally accessed some files on the computer of US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Bloomberg reported, citing its sources.

According to their information, the hackers had at their disposal about 50 unclassified files that were stored on a device belonging to the head of the Treasury Department. In addition, the computers of US First Deputy Treasury Secretary Adewale Adeyemo, as well as of Acting US Deputy Treasury Secretary Bradley Smith, writes Bloomberg.

In early January, the newspaper The Washington Post claimed that hackers linked to the PRC had hacked the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which is responsible for imposing sanctions, and Yellen's office. According to sources in the publication, Beijing may have obtained information about those whom Washington considers potential targets for new sanctions.

Beijing's usual position is that the United States itself is the source and largest perpetrator of cyberattacks.
