Donald Trump signed an order to limit the granting of US citizenship at birth, local central television stations reported.

“This is an executive order that deals with the definition of citizenship at birth under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution“, said an aide to the president before signing the document.

"This is ridiculous. We are the only country in the world that does this with respect to birthright," the new American leader said.

As Trump's press office explained, this is an executive order "ending birthright citizenship." The text of the document has not yet been published.

According to Reuters, the executive order provides for restrictions on granting birthright US citizenship to children of illegal immigrants.

At the end of December 2024 CNN, citing sources, reported that Trump's team is considering various options for eliminating birthright citizenship. The media outlet notes that the Republican team does not rule out tightening the rules for issuing tourist visas to combat "birth tourism." The channel also noted that the State Department may be prohibited from "issuing passports to children if their parents do not have documents." In early December 2024, Trump, in an interview with NBC News, confirmed his plans to end the practice of granting birthright citizenship. He stressed that he considers the automatic granting of citizenship, guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, ridiculous and plans to end this practice by signing an executive order.

On his first day in the White House, US President Donald Trump signed several dozen documents, spending 47 minutes and 5 seconds on this.

The signing of documents in the Oval Office of the White House in the presence of journalists turned into a spontaneous press conference: the president signed decrees and simultaneously answered questions from the press. Trump also noted that his predecessor Joe Biden had never done such a thing.

After the ceremony in Congress, he signed the first executive orders and directives regarding appointments in his administration. In addition, during the day, the American leader spoke at a rally in front of his supporters at the Capital One Sports Arena, where he also signed several documents. CBS reported that Trump has signed a total of about 200 executive orders, memoranda and proclamations.

On his first day as president in 2017, Trump signed only one executive order, which affected provisions of the health care law.
