In her speech to MEPs in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the strong economic ties between the EU and the US, stressing that there are no more interconnected economies in the world. Von der Leyen explained that millions of jobs and the stability of both economies depend on these relations, BTA reports.
She announced that the main goal of the EU under the new US leadership will be to quickly establish a relationship and negotiate in a pragmatic spirit, while respecting European principles.
Geopolitical rivalry and energy independence
According to the President of the EC, the new geostrategic era requires the EU to defend its values through economic power. She expressed her belief that the actions of major powers would focus on pursuing their own interests, stressing that the EU should reduce its dependence on Russian energy sources and invest in clean energy. It is also important for Von der Leyen to improve the energy transmission network in Europe.
Continued support for Ukraine and closer transatlantic relations
European Council President Antonio Costa insisted that the EU should continue to provide assistance to Ukraine until peace is fully restored. According to him, the future enlargement of the EU by accepting Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkan countries would be a key step for peace and security in Europe.
Costa also stressed the need to renew relations with the UK and strengthen transatlantic ties. In this context, he announced that a European Council meeting dedicated to defense would be held on February 3, which would also include the leaders of NATO and the UK.
