The energy crisis in Transnistria threatens to turn into an energy catastrophe. This was warned by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration of Moldova Oleg Serebrian on the air of the Moldova 1 television channel.

The politician explained that within 10-15 days the region will exhaust all reserves of gas and coal for electricity generation. “The situation is changing every hour”, he noted.

Earlier, the former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Valeriu Ostalep pointed out that the energy crisis has further aggravated relations between Moldova and Transnistria, so an escalation of the conflict is possible as early as next February. He believes that the dialogue to resolve the gas and energy crisis could become an additional reason for the deterioration of the situation, which threatens to worsen in light of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova.

Gas supplies to Transnistria were suspended on January 1 after the expiration of Gazprom's contract for gas transit through Ukraine. Moldova refuses to help supply gas to Transnistria with the help of Russia, as such actions violate the sanctions regime and national legislation.
