Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has denied claims by an Israeli journalist on the social network Ex that the Trump administration is in talks with Albania to accept 100,000 residents of the Gaza Strip, Euronews Albania reported.
Rama wrote on Ex in response to Israeli journalist Amit Segal's claims that he had not heard anything so fake in a long time. He accompanied his post with photos of Segal's post, crossed out with red crosses and the caption "Fake news".
"I have not heard anything so fake in a long time – and there has been a lot of fake news lately! Absolutely not true," Rama wrote.
He added that Albania cannot assume such a responsibility.
"Full respect and solidarity with the people of Gaza, who have suffered greatly under the brutal Hamas regime and endured a horrific war following the tragedies of October 7 (2023). But let me be clear: Albania has not been asked by anyone, nor can we even think of taking on such a responsibility," the Albanian prime minister wrote.
He stressed that Albania is proud of its strong friendships with Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, as well as "the Palestinian people, whose state Albania recognized a long time ago."
"But Albania is not in the Middle East by itself, and, from the heart of Europe, we cannot do more than any other European country on this issue. Yet we wish and pray that the Palestinian people will be given the chance to live in their own state as a free people under democratic rule, and that "Hamas" will never again be able to harm Israel or, above all and primarily, the Palestinians themselves," Rama concluded his post.
