The European Commission has stressed the seriousness of protecting the critical energy network by putting pressure on Ukraine regarding gas transit. This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a meeting of the parliamentary economic committee, TASR reported, quoted by Focus.
Fico commented that the European Commission's declaration requires third countries to recognize that energy security is a key issue for the European Union.
“This is a language that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky understands. He is aware that if the EU suspends all sanctions against Russia, he will face the risk of not receiving a single euro from the European Union“, the Slovak PM added.
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar also expressed support for the EU's position. On Monday, he welcomed the statement by the European diplomatic representative Kaia Kalas that the Commission stands with Slovakia and Hungary in protecting their critical energy network.
Blanard also noted Kiev's readiness to assist in transporting natural gas to Europe from alternative sources outside Russia, which was highly appreciated during the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
