A Massachusetts man was arrested in the Capitol after telling police he intended to kill senior Republicans, including Treasury Secretary Scott Besant. This was reported by CNN, citing official sources, quoted by News.bg.
Ryan Michael English, 24, of South Deerfield, turned himself in after informing police that he was carrying knives and "Molotov cocktails". According to a police affidavit, a search of his vehicle yielded a folding knife, two homemade firebombs and a lighter.
English said he had come to the Capitol with the intention of killing Besant, having previously researched information about him online related to his confirmation hearing.
Investigators searched English's car, where they found materials for making a homemade explosive device. According to police, he also intended to attack other Republican figures, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett and House Speaker Mike Johnson, as well as to set fire to the building of the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation.
Scott Besant was confirmed as US Treasury Secretary by a vote of 68 to 68 in the Senate. to 29 "no", with 16 Democrats supporting his nomination.
English was arrested on charges of unlawful possession and transfer of a firearm, as well as carrying dangerous weapons and incendiary devices on Capitol grounds.
